Guides and knowledge for buyers planning custom canvas bags.
Two suppliers quote the "same" canvas tote at USD 1.10 and USD 2.30. Neither is necessarily lying. One is quoting 8 oz fabric with a single-colour print and no interlining; the other is quoting 12 oz with a base panel, a zipper and a two-colour print. Until the specification matches, the prices cannot be compared.
This breakdown shows what actually sits inside a bag price, so you can read a quotation, spot the differences, and negotiate on the right line.
| Cost block | Typical share of FOB | What moves it |
|---|---|---|
| Fabric | 35–55% | Weight (GSM), fibre, colour, shrinkage treatment |
| Trims & accessories | 5–12% | Handles, zippers, linings, pockets, metal hardware |
| Printing | 8–25% | Method, number of colours, print area, version count |
| Sewing labour | 12–25% | Panel count, stitching complexity, reinforcement |
| Packing | 3–8% | Polybag, hangtag, barcode, carton grade |
| Overhead & margin | 8–15% | Factory size, order volume, payment terms |
Freight, duty and inspection sit outside the FOB price and are discussed below, because they are where budgets usually break.
A 38 × 42 cm tote with two handles consumes roughly 0.55–0.65 m² of fabric including cutting waste. At 10 oz (340 g/m²) that is about 200 g of cotton per bag; at 12 oz it rises to about 240 g.
Cotton canvas typically costs USD 2.20–3.20 per kilogram in greige, more once dyed and pre-shrunk. That puts raw fabric at roughly USD 0.45–0.65 per bag at 10 oz — before waste, which runs 5–8% on a simple pattern and 12%+ on a curved or multi-panel design.
Three things change this number quickly:
Handles are the main cost here. Cotton webbing is cheaper than leather; a padded handle, a metal adjuster or a riveted attachment each adds a line. Linings, internal pockets, zippers and branded metal hardware can add USD 0.20–0.80 per bag depending on quality — frequently more than the difference between 10 oz and 12 oz fabric.
This is the block where cheap quotes hide. Ask what the handle is made of, how it is attached, and whether there is any interlining. "Same style" can mean cotton webbing stitched flat, or polyester webbing with an X-box stitch and a plastic slider.
Printing is two costs, not one:
At 100 pieces, setup can be 15–25% of the unit price. At 5,000 pieces it is under 1%. This is the main reason small orders look expensive per unit — and the main reason consolidating versions saves more than squeezing the fabric price.
Labour is driven by the number of operations, not by bag dimensions. A simple open tote is roughly 12–16 operations: cut, fold, hem, attach handles, bartack, trim, inspect. Add a lining, an internal pocket, a zipper and a base panel and you can double that.
Where labour shows up in quality: stitches per inch (8–10 is normal), bar tacks at handle ends, and whether the seam allowances are overlocked or bound. A supplier quoting a lower price is often reducing operations, not wages.
Packing is 3–8% of FOB but it controls shipping volume, which can be a bigger number than the packing itself. Compressing bags into a smaller carton can cut ocean freight by 10–20% on a light, bulky product like canvas.
Typical line items: individual polybag or paper band, hangtag and its attachment, barcode sticker, silica gel, master carton (5-ply for export), and carton markings. Ask for carton dimensions and pieces per carton early — it is the only way to compare freight quotes properly.
Factory overhead is spread across orders, so bigger orders carry less per piece. Margin depends on how busy the factory is: in a slow season you will see 8%, in peak season 15% for the same product. This is why quotes expire, and why a re-quote three months later is not the same price.
The table below is for budget planning only. It assumes a plain cotton canvas tote, 38 × 42 cm, two webbing handles, one-colour one-position screen print, individual polybag, FOB Ningbo/Shanghai, and prices in 2026. Your specification will move these numbers.
| Quantity | 8 oz | 10 oz | 12 oz | 12 oz + lining & zip |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 100 pcs | USD 1.40–1.90 | USD 1.60–2.40 | USD 1.90–2.80 | USD 2.60–3.80 |
| 500 pcs | USD 1.05–1.40 | USD 1.20–1.75 | USD 1.45–2.10 | USD 2.10–3.10 |
| 1,000 pcs | USD 0.90–1.25 | USD 1.00–1.55 | USD 1.25–1.85 | USD 1.90–2.80 |
| 5,000 pcs | USD 0.75–1.05 | USD 0.85–1.30 | USD 1.05–1.60 | USD 1.65–2.40 |
If a quote lands far outside these bands, the difference is diagnostic: either the specification is different from what you assumed, or something is being left out of the price.
Setup is fixed, so its effect on unit price is pure division:
Same screens, same print, 50× difference in per-unit impact. Reducing colours from three to one saves USD 50 in setup and simplifies approval — often a better trade than arguing over 3% on fabric.
Buyers routinely budget on FOB and get surprised at the door. Build these in:
A quote that cannot answer these ten points is not yet a quote:
What is not a legitimate way: asking for 10 oz and accepting 8 oz, or accepting a lower AQL without knowing it. Those savings appear on the invoice and disappear in the first month of use.
A quote 30% below the market for a fully specified bag usually means one of five things: lighter fabric, fewer stitching operations, cheaper trims, no inspection, or a specification that will change after the deposit. Ask which. A supplier who can explain where the saving comes from is negotiating; one who cannot is planning to disappoint you.
Cotton prices, exchange rates, labour and factory loading all move. Ask for the changed cost line rather than a new total, and check whether the specification shifted too.
Rarely on unit price, sometimes on total cost — if they handle consolidation, inspection and documentation better than you can. Compare landed cost and risk, not FOB.
You can sometimes get 2–5%, but you lose all leverage on quality and delivery. A 30/70 split with an inspection clause is worth more than the discount.
USD 30–100 for a custom bag, often credited against the bulk order. A free sample is usually a stock item, not your specification.
